Back to Military Life!

Today is the big day! It's actually the day that I've been talking about for some time to those who know me best. After a little over four years of being solely a civilian, I'm re-enlisting in the Air National Guard as a "traditional" guardsman. You may as why and I'll give you the same answer I gave my wife. I miss it and I owe them! The four years I spent in the Air Force was perhaps the most gratifying years of my life. I not only acquired direction after years of not having a clue of what I wanted to do, I gained a love for my country. The relationships that I built during those four years are the strongest relationships other than my family that I have today.

I'm definitely lucky that I have a family who supports me enough not to push back at this and understands the cause. It's definitely going to be a proud moment this afternoon when I stand with my family and take that oath of enlistment when just over 8 years ago, I took it alone at the Charlotte MEPS. Hopefully, I'll make them proud!

My goals are to
1. Display the core values (Integrity First, Service before Self and Excellence in all we do.
2. Learn a new trade (HVAC will be my job)
3. Build new relationships (You simply don't get finer friends than those who serve)
4. Earn rank and eventually become an officer.

With respect to my family, Please pray for them in this time of change. I've done this before but, it's all new to them.

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one hell of a roar!*
We live in fame or go down in flame.
Nothing can stop the U.S. Air Force!

FSU vs. Western Carolina

The Florida State University Seminoles kicked off their 2008 season Saturday night at Doak Campbell stadium and the Knight Boys were in the house to root them on. This was Brycen and Tillman's third FSU game and the Noles are now 3-0 when they are in attendance. We got to Tallahassee around 2:00 as we left after Brycen's soccer game. The first stop as usual on Gameday was at "Garnet and Gold" to pickup a few pieces of Seminoles paraphernalia and then to my official gameday hotel at the Quality Inn on Appalachee Pkwy. It's pretty funny at how much the boys love a "hotel". I have no doubt that it is passed down from me. I can still remember as a teenager going on cross country trips with my family and spending the night in a small rv and every now and then, dad would be trying to leg out an extra hundred miles which would get us to the destination late at night therefore, we would stop at a Motel 6 and it was like HEAVEN to me. I guess it went to show how spoiled I was. At any rate, the boys are hilarious running down those halls to the hotel room. It even seems like a tradition now with the amount of travel that we do.

Our stopover at the hotel was short since we wanted to let the boys experience a tailgate with the normal crew. I had low expectations for the tailgate however, I'm pretty sure both would have made it for a 3-4 hour tailgate although, this was only for about an hour. After getting filthy in the dirt and 8 or 9 of Rich's cookies, We set forth toward Doak. I always enjoy the walk however, it's definitely more special when I'm carrying my kids than a couple twelve oz cans trying to get that last sip in. Their simple expressions just seem to give me chills and we hadn't even see the kickoff or heard the Warchant yet. The Seminole Athletic Department has made tons of changes to the pregame this season to liven things up and outside the stadium now, we have about a 6 0r 7 foot drum that fans stop by and beat the Warchant on. Brycen was "too cool" to do it but, Tillman beat a few of his own notes before we walked in. As soon as we got in the stadium, the first of three weather delays got us. I was definitely nervous that we wouldn't see one snap since it was already 6:00 and a 2 year old's attention span isn't the greatest. However, armed with 2 buckets of popcorn (first one was spilled), nachos and a large cup of CO-CO, they were troopers. The game finally got started around 7:15 only long enough for a Western three and out and FSU punt return for td before there was yet another weather delay (lightning). This time we went back to the tailgate site and the kids played under the tent for a little bit until the lightning got worse and we made the decision to head back to the hotel around 8:30.

The game wasn't on tv so I was tuned in via radio in the hotel room and the result definitely exceeded my expectations. I know Western wasn't the best competition however, the new personnel due to the suspensions and new starters looked great so I think we got plenty of potential but, I'm still holding back judgement until we have all of our starters back and are up against a solid opponent September 27 vs. Colorado here in Jax.

Next up is Chattanooga at 3:45 in Doak and I have my parents coming in town for their first ever experience at Doak. Them along with Brycen and me will be heading to Tally after Brycen's 8:30 soccer game on Saturday morning.

GO NOLES!!!

"Hurricane Fall Soccer is Underway"

Brycen began his second soccer season on Saturday morning with the Oakleaf YMCA under-6 Fall Soccer league. While he didn't score any goals, he looked much improved and experienced from his Spring debut. Being the competitive person that I am, I scored the game 3-1 in our favor although, on this level, the score really isn't given attention. We will be back in action tonight at 6:30.

2008 FSU Football Prediction

Well, It's officially time! Today seems like Christmas Eve with the Noles kicking off their season for tomorrow. I typically like to type up a long email with my feelings and prediction about the upcoming season. Being the "optimistic" person I am, I rarely get even in the ballpark of our final record so hopefully, I can break that this season.

This season will be a very interesting season. For the first time in probably thirty years, we have zero expectations outside of the program. Many publications didn't even include us in their Top 25. Many of our players were shutout of pre-season accolades or "watch lists". However, My expectations will never change for the Noles. Another 7-6 season for me would be a terrible season and 8-5 wouldn't be much better. I like the recruits and the coaching staff however, I want to see some results this season. First off, i don't see this as being Coach Bowden's last season unless something catastrophic happens and since our last game next year is in the Swamp, I really don't see him ending his career there either so who knows? I doubt Jimbo sticks around for 3 years although, results like last year could force his hand. At any rate, This is what I'm looking to see out of the 2008 edition of the Seminoles:

9/6/08 - Western Carolina - WIN (45-7)--Great opportunity for backups to learn
9/13/08 - Chattanooga - WIN (42-10)--See last game
9/20/08 - Wake Forest - LOSS (35-27)-- 2 years in a row that Wake has beaten us. I'm sorry but, I can't see us winning with so many players out.
9/27/08 - Colorado (JAX) - WIN (35-17)-- We defeat a solid team with return of starters. We always win in JAX!!!
10/4/08 - @Miami - WIN (31-27) -- Payback from last year's stunner
10/16/08 - @NCST - WIN (35-14) -- Finally end Thursday Night struggles.Besides NCST can't beat us without Chuck!
10/25/08 - Virginia Tech -- WIN (27-17) - Payback from last year on overrated VT!
11/1/08 - @GT - WIN (33-19) - GT not there yet!
11/8/08 -- Clemson - LOSS (27-21) -- Too much Thunder and Lightning!
11/15/08 - Boston College - WIN (35-24) - Homecoming-Blackout Day!!!
11/22/08 - @ Maryland --LOSS(13-28) - Cold Night in MD vs. Good team!
11/29/08 - UF --LOSS (42-31) - Too much UF offense and Tebow ends career vs. FSU 2-0.

Since I can't predict what all the other ACC teams will do, I have no clue what bowl or if we make ACC Championship. We definitely will be in picture if we finish with under 3 ACC losses.

NFL Early Entrees (Everette Brown, Corey Surrency, Preston Parker, Myron Rolle, Patrick Robinson).

Labor Day Excursion

I'm late getting this up with the procedure and all. At any rate, I took the family on a day trip over to the gulf on Monday. We drove through Gainesville where I pointed out the stadium where one day, the boys will each experience victory and then headed over to Silver Springs and finally to the small fishing town of Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico. Silver Springs was really neat since I spent some of my favorite vacation time as a kid there. It's changed since I was there however, really cool seeing the boys enjoy it. I think they liked it more than Disney World.

I guess the lowpoint of the trip was getting a 60/45 speeding ticket in the small town of Waldo, FL. The cop actually was hiding behind a small bldg, "Roscoe Peco Train" style. Pretty insane if you ask me but, I guess he was doing his job. I mean nevermind all the other crime going on in the metropolis of Waldo, he has to get us fathers taking our family on Labor Day trips.

D-Day

Tomorrow is my first ever Colonoscopy and I thought I would share these words of comfort that someone sent to me.

This is from newshound Dave Barry's
> colonoscopy journal:
>
> .. I called my friend Andy Sable, a
> gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few
> days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the
> colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one
> point passing briefly through Minneapolis . Then Andy explained the
> colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient
> manner. I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he
> said, because my brain was shrieking, quote, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A
> TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!'
>
> I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a
> prescription for a product called 'MoviPrep,'
> which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will
> discus s MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we
> must never allow it to fall into the hands of America 's enemies.
>
> I spent the next several days
> productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my
> colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my
> instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was
> chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor. Then,
> in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder
> together in a one-liter plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm
> water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about
> 32 gallons.) Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about
> an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a
> mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.
>
> The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a
> great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose watery
> bowel movement may result.' This is kind of like saying that after you
> jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.
>
> MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here,
> but: Have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty much
> the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when
> you wish the commode had a seat belt.
> You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting
> violently. You eliminate every thing. And then, when you figure you
> must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at
> which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future
> and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.
>
> After an action-packed evening, I
> finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic.
> I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I
> had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I
> was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy? ' How do you apologize to
a
> friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough.
>
> At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood
> and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said. Then they
> led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside
> a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of
> those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that,
> when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are
> actually naked.
>
> Then a nurse named Eddie put a little
> needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted,
> but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also
> told me that some people put vodka in their MoviPrep. At first I was
> ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what
> would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom,
> so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have
> no choice but to burn your house.
>
> When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room,
> where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not
> see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there
> somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll
> over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something
> up to the needle in my hand.
> There was music playing in the room, and I realized that the song was
> 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that
> could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen'
has
> to be the least appropriate.
>
> 'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere beh ind me.
'Ha
> ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for
> more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I
> am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like.
>
> I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was
> yelling 'Dancing Queen, Feel the beat of the tambourine,' and the next
> moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood.
> Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt
> excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that It was
> all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors. I have
> never been prouder of an internal organ.
